Power From the People

The toasty SUVs full of people enjoying the "McDonald's Holiday Lights at the Beach, Presented by Verizon Wireless" on the Boardwalk are unaware that the power required for the dinky lightbulb dolphins and such is being pulled from low-income households at the Oceanfront.

"It sucks," says Chester Ray Finch, 51, a window washer that has lived on 25th 1/2 Street in Virginia Beach since 1982.  "I can't watch television, use my microwave, or anything while that dumb thing's going on.  My daughter has to do her homework by candlelight in her winter coat."

The light show reroutes roughly 1.7 megawatts from over 2,000 Oceanfront residents - most of them between 9th and 29th St., between Pacific and Cypress Avenue.  In an email, Dominion Electric spokesperson, Mel Dodd states, "We need power from somewhere.  We can't just create it out of nothing - we're not magicians."

During late night and daylight hours, when the holiday lights aren't on, residents put up with weak power flow, sparks emitting from wall sockets, and barely enough hot water.  29-year-old pizza chef Scott Griggs lives in an apartment complex on 22nd Street and says that his complaints to the city have been ignored.  "They always say how important it is for Oceanfront businesses and families and if I don't like it, I should move.  I live paycheck to paycheck - where the hell am I supposed to go?  Maybe if they compensated us a little it would be different, but I don't know what they do with all that money."

Tidewater Log discovered that holiday light show admissions go to improving the landscaping around the 31st Street Park and King Neptune Statue maintenance.  "What a crock of crap," Scott mutters as he zips up his 2nd coat in the kitchen of his chilly apartment.  Since there isn't enough power to turn the heat on, he burns crumpled up newspapers in the sink to keep warm.  The smoke detector won't go off because he's using the battery for his alarm clock.  "Even if this place burns down, I still gotta be at work at 6 in the morning."

Mr. Dodd continues in his email, "I don't understand why these people are complaining all of a sudden.  It's been going on for years and, in addition to providing them 2 free vouchers to enjoy the event, we always hang notices on their doorknobs to remind them.  Maybe the storm blew them off or something, but they should be used to it by now.  Happy Thanksgiving."

It's all Meyera Obendorf's fault. Impeach! Impeach!

Who do those ppl think they are anyways? Coz I'll tell you who they really are, they are the obstacles keeping Virginia Beach down... keeping us from having our own little oceanfront Mac Authur Mall, our vast and endless landscape of time shares, and most importantly our chance for a crack at the fabled year round tourist dollar.

ENJOY THE LIGHTS.

IT IS ONE OF THE BEST THINGS IN VIRGINIA BEACH

Oh good grief! All of the dumb-ass drama loving hicks are going to eat this up. But it's OK, they can't afford $10 nor do they have a car reliable enough to drive all the way down the boardwalk anyway. Enjoy the lights, it's wonderful to have this sort of thing in our beautiful town! And check out the ones at the Botanical Gardens too (The Garden Of Lights), it's also $10 and I'm sure it has robbed all of the electricity from only the poor people in Norfolk.

Jennifer, please be advised that this entire post about Holiday Lights at the Beach is all 100% fact! There is a person -- spokesperson or otherwise -- that works for Dominion named Mel Dodd! And furthermore, the entire story about residents being impacted by the light show is completely true.

This must be a joke. You all suck!

Hey, I think you should notify the news media about this. This is outrageous!

Uhm, last I checked, there wasn't low income housing from 9th to 29th street. Unless by 'low income' you mean 'not making 100,000 a year'.

Walk around WEST of Atlantic Avenue. It's depressing...and dangerous.

Anonymous said...

Plenty of low income in this area...only gotta walk west a couple blocks..any how no one should be cold inside thier home...maybe dominion power should pull from the north end where I'm SURE they would have no complaints

Hey! I live and the North End and I sure WOULD mind...

Come on guys! If you have the balls to post a comment please have the balls to post your name! This really is happening and its sad! Do you have any clue that you are charge more to use power on peak hours than during the night? So you should only dry clothes and iron at night!! ... or for some of you smart/dumb asses have your maid do it! This is truly a problem and I have dealt with dominion from NC to VA and it is a crock... have we lost the memory of the monopoly that AT&T had years ago and was MADE to split due to rules our so call government enforced? Well, quit your mean come backs to the people in need here!! If you want to live at the beach you should be able to!! If you pay your bill you should have full power! Simple! if you run a company than you should give good service or shut down due to no customers, Right? Well we dont have that choice so we are FUCKED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
